    Hey folks,

Having cleaned up after finishing the trouser-ruiningly scary P.T, the excitement for new horror games has set in. There's a storied history of interesting horror releases, with Indie devs leading the way when it comes to bladder loosening terror. The Amnesia titles, The Dark Descent and A Machine for Pigs, both immersive, dark and incredibly sinister.

Slender Man is another game that's incredibly simple in its execution, but truly shines as an exemplary horror experience that you want to share with friends and discuss online. It's the Twitch era of horror, where streaming live scares is the go-to activity for any jump-scare nuts.

Triple-A horror gaming appeared to have peaked with Silent Hill 2. Without having to pull out set pieces or general jump scare tactics, Silent Hill’s clinging atmosphere creates tension through it’s very existence, making the player feel truly alone all the while building the sense of impending doom. If you look at big budget horror from the last few years you will be saddened by the lack of scares on offer, but the P.T. is the herald of what is to come, with Silent Hills beckoning with the promise that gamers will ‘shit their pants’. The Evil Within, Alien Isolation and other gems are also being developed as we speak, and will hopefully create a renaissance in horror. For better or worse...

What's your favourite horror game? Being even more specific - what's your favourite scare in any game ever? What horror title are you most looking forward to, and how do you think the rise of indie horror games and Twitch has shaped the kind of horror experiences we get today? Answers on a bloodstained postcard!

    Hey folks,

It seems the good, the bad and the ugly hang around the Kickstarter saloon. In Hard West we have the good, the badass and a game to eagerly await. It's being developed by an experienced team consisting of developers from the Call of Juarez and Dead Island series, and the ideas are original and distinct enough to grab our attention.

In essence, it's an amalgamation of gritty western and the surreal nature of the supernatural - all the while seeking to create an atmosphere that evokes uncertainty and tension. It’s their way of applying an interesting twist to the standard Western formula. The notion conjures very fond memories of Red Dead Redemption's Zombie Nightmare DLC, which was a cracking romp. If Hard West is able to pull off its own brand of unnatural surrealism it would certainly be worth diving into.

The developers describe the game as turn-based tactical, likening the combat frame work to that of XCOM. They've expanded XCOM's mechanics, placing the focus on positioning.

The few gifs of the game show it's gloriously gory, with visceral effects on all of the various weapons in the game's arsenal. The range of firearms showcases real imagination, from your standard western to more extravagant iterations - the four barrelled shotgun on their Kickstarter page has lead to a few nerdgasms here in the office!

Take a look at Hard West’s Kickstarter page, a copy of the game is available for a very palatable $10 dollar donation, so it is well worth backing if you like what you see! The subject of our last feature, Gryphon Knight Epic, is really close to reaching it’s Kickstarter goal and is well worth checking out if you missed it first time round!

    Hey folks,

I hope that your loins are collectively girded for today’s rewards. There are plenty of cracking new releases to be excited about, including the amazing Super Time Force Ultra!

You play as a true time wizard soldier with the ability to spawn versions your past self to overcome the obstacles that get in your way. With a really crisp retro design the game conjures some great nostalgic feels. The gameplay mechanic itself is inventive and a ton of fun, and the dynamism of bringing different forms of yourself from the past to conqueror bullet hell mobs, humongous badass bosses and those sneaky puzzles, is super engrossing.

As though a sweet game couldn't get any sweeter, for those Team Fortress 2 fans out there, you can live out the dream of playing as the Pyro or Mann Co's esteemed CEO Saxton Hale as you romp through the game, with Zoey from Left 4 Dead also making an appearance - I hope that she won't be overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness of Saxton in all his glory! Get ready for some gaming!

    Hey folks,

The lovelies at 4A Games aren’t happy to sit on their laurels and good looks, they’ve been busy busting out the cult classic Metro 2033 and its sequel, Last Light, in a new shinier state.

Take the opportunity to pick up a franchise that passed you by or rediscover a classic that's been remastered! Explore the Moscow metro and survive in a post apocalyptic world filled with all sorts of nasty machinations, all of which are looking to turn you into a pile of glob!

The games have been migrated onto the latest iteration of the 4A Engine, which means that the lighting and physics have been turned up to tear jerkingly pretty. Metro 2033 looks especially remarkable, completely updated with new assets and rendering techniques, even taking Last Light's much more sturdy game interface so you feel like you're playing a more modern game. With the announcement that Tekken were teaming up with Pokémon to make the ultimate Poke-fighting game, I've been thinking about some of the more notable gaming crossovers.

Tekken and Pokémon on paper read like to very unlikely bedfellows, but in the trailers seeing Machamp lining up toe-to-toe with Lucario you get the sense that after a series of RPG’s based around the world of Pokémon, a fighting game might be the best way to simulate two powerful trainers battling.

Fighting games as a genre is well suited for crossovers, with Dark Vader and Yoda making appearances in Soul Caliber IV as a toe-dipping exercise, with larger crossovers including a greater selection of characters, such as Mortal Kombat v DC Universe which featured 11 characters from each franchise. There is something endlessly novel about seeing the Scorpion beating seven shades of stuffing out of Superman, as well as being a solid game.

Ultimately crossovers have a tendency to feel really novel, providing a new strange environment for some of your favourite characters - there is always the potential that the game itself will leave you disappointed. I’d love to hear what’s been your favourite crossover. Maybe you have a crossover you would really love to see in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

Our glorious leader, radMonkey, has a hankering to see a Disney Cars meets DayZ (the ramblings of a madman!), Joncol has an itch that only Nathan Drake going on adventures with Lara Croft could scratch, or to see Elite: Dangerous style gameplay in a Star Wars universe. Personally I’d like to see a League of Legends and DOTA 2 crossover, so Garen and Juggernaut can settle once and for all who is the king of spin.

Thanks to everyone who entered the Playfire Newsletter competition last week.

We had some fantastic entries, each of them giving a real insight into what games you love and why. Our winner is wnwolf, whose fantastic story summed up what it's like to grow up as a gamer. Congratulations! I'll be in contact with your prize keys :D

"In 2005 I was still in university studying Computer Science. Since videogames were a big hobby of mine, I wanted to finish my Master's degree by creating a videogame of my own. I had already made a prototype of a 3D adventure game in a programming language called VRML and decided that I would remake and enhance this game by myself using the Source Engine from Half-Life 2.
Games at that period in time were not really seen as a high profile academic subjects at most universities and the same was true in my case. Still, I was convinced that making games was a worthwhile pursuit, since it is a very complex process which requires a varied collection of programming skills and project management.
A couple of months passed and I was progressing slowly but steadily with my game. During this period I came across a game project from Digipen students called Narbacular Drop. The concept was quite simple: by only using two interconnected gateways, the player must guide Princess No-Knees to the end. Jumping wasn't possible. I played the game and I was struck by the sheer brilliance of the concept. At the same time I thought: why didn't I think of this for my own game? I would have loved to create a similar revolutionary game. With Narbacular Drop in the back of my mind as motivation, I finished up my own game and I released it in the summer of 2006 as a free mod for Half-Life 2.
After finishing up my own game I heard about the spiritual successor of Narbacular Drop called Portal, being developed by the Digipen students who were all hired by Valve. When it was finally released in 2007 and I played it, I was convinced that videogames and academics are not as far removed from each other as one might think considering how good Portal is. Furthermore, not only did Portal refine the original gameplay of Narbacular Drop, it also added a whole new layer of depth that is unparalled to this day. Portal was the revolution and I am glad to have witnessed it.
In closing, I can say with convidence that videogames finally get much more respect in the academic world. It also remains a big hobby of mine :)"

Our first runner up is hyperhop, whose romantic anecdote about his sister meeting her future husband on Team Fortress 2 brought the twinkle of a tear to radMonkey's eye. Just joking, he doesn't know what love is.

"I just came back from my sister's wedding and for me the number 1 on my list is the game that changed my (sister's) life, the Orange box. Specifically Team Fortress 2 from the Orange box. My sister met her now husband playing Team Fortress 2. After 4 years of courtship, thousands of hours of TF2 and thousands of TF2 kills, they finally got married a few days ago. So I can truly say that Team Fortress 2 has changed my family's life.
She's so into TF2, the tables at the wedding dinner used the class icons as markers!
My advice for everyone especially the single ladies? Play TF2 now and maybe you can also find true love online while pretending to be fat Russian dude wielding a chaingun with a degree in Russian literature."

Secondly, virulent0o talks about Dragon Age: Origins. A great RPG that he loves dearly...

"Recall that epic feeling when William Wallace cried "FreeeeDooomm" during Braveheart?

No? Then I suggest you add Braveheart to your must watch list right after playing Dragon Age: Origins. For those who know what I'm talking about, completing DA:O will leave you with the same goose bump inducing epicness.

Of course, it's not just the end that's epic. If DA:O wasn't produced before the Game of Thrones, I would've thought the DA:O's writing copied a few pages from G.R.R Martin's series. Betrayal, fighting for the throne, family slaughter and more back-stabbing (sorry curious people, no incest) are just some of the things I got to experience from the start!
Along the journey I got to meet unique companions, learn their stories and fall in love with/despise them through well voiced dialogues. Characters in this game wasn't just there to support me, each one provides a memorable experience throughout the journey. From the sharp-tongued Morrigan to my faithful barking companion.

DA:O is the most memorable since Baldur's gate. Why? Simple, no hand holding good/evil dialogue wheels. I make the choices and have to live with the consequences. Here's to hoping Morrigan would make her return in the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition."

d finally, dan958 loves a bit of Skyrim - much like Joncol - and discusses its incredible orchestral score.

"I'm going to talk about Skyrim, but in a slightly different method on why I think it deserves to be in the top 10 - the soundtrack. Probably one of my favourite gaming soundtracks, full stop. With enough playtime to this soundtrack, it is certainly long enough to keep you occupied for multiple hours. Definitely enough time for you to fall asleep if you use it as a relaxation method as I do. The soundtrack has many different styles of music, from quiet flutes all the way to men chanting.
My favourite out of the CD is the ‘Skyrim atmosphere’ track, it just takes out the audio from a walk around Skyrim. You will hear birds tweet and you will hear waterfalls swoosh. I am currently listening to it now as inspiration to write, so I can at least try to put into words how powerful the soundtrack is. If you are a fan of sountracks or relaxation music, then take a look at the Skyrim soundtrack – it is a must have."

    Thanks guys!

    Hey folks,

Hope y’all are looking forward to a wild weekend of gaming and Playfire Rewards. It’s good to know that when things get a bit crazy, when life throws you a curveball and turns normal upside-down - such as when you get marooned on an island filled with zombies - that games have trained you for these oddly specific scenarios!

Building shelters, gathering resources and fighting zombies round the world would be the sort of thing you’d imagine Russell Crowe to be doing, but How to Survive gives players the chance to get stuck in themselves. With surprisingly visceral and satisfying combat, coupled with an engaging range of weaponry, with the ability to craft over 100 weapons gibbing zombo’s has rarely been so satisfying. Given the added range that only survival aspects of a game can provide, there is the potential to have a really great time as well as getting those cheeky Playfire Rewards!

If you haven't tried the Playfire Rewards BETA and want to participate, it's easy, just log into Playfire with your Green Man Gaming email address and password, sign in with Steam! For more information check out our FAQ.

We're very happy to announce that Green Man Gaming will, for a second year, be the headline sponsor for the Golden Joystick Awards!

    Hey folks,

It's the joyful calm before the storm of new releases, heralded by the fast-approaching Dead Rising 3, which releases on PC soon. For now, I’ve added some rewards for Divinity: Original Sin to compliment the white knuckle ride that is RECYCLE.

In this garbage truck sim you undertake the multifaceted quests and heroic endeavours that befall all great sanitary workers. With a wide range of valiant steeds from which to strike forth from your home camp, you must first recruit a group of companions worthy of succeeding in your noble machinations. Once your party has been equipped with the most glorious light reflecting burbles that Human Resources can muster, our valiant heroes look to quell the ever-present menace of refuse. Playfire Rewards will be the glorious Princess at the end of your recycling quest.

    Hey folks,

We always try to get new rewards on for new releases but there are occasions where one or two titles slip through the net. I’ve had to flay myself in recompense for missing out the truly magnificent Gang Beasts, which I witnessed radMonkey and Joncol playing in the office a few weeks back.

Gang Beasts channels the spirit of Surgeon Simulator and QWOP, with that spirit being fun unbound. It is best described as a drunken brawler with gelatinous characters that just want to brutalise each other with hilarious consequences. With arenas crafted to allow for the maximum amount of fun, players can throw their opponents into outrageously hazardous machinery for a grizzly doom. Alternatively, throw your foe off a spectacular drop to learn whether our pugnacious heroes can fly! Playfire Rewards is ready to step into the ring with you, so get involved now!

On a happy note, AgentPsyducK’s Playfire Rewards Hunters group on Steam passed 1k members this week which is a cool milestone! If you guys aren’t already members it’s well worth checking out! Keep up the good work guys :)

If you haven't tried the Playfire Rewards BETA and want to participate, it's easy, just log into Playfire with your Green Man Gaming email address and password, sign in with Steam! For more information check out our FAQ.
